Hillary Clinton’s campaign and the Democratic National Committee helped fund the Trump dossier.
A scoop from The Washington Post says the dossier, written by former spy Christopher Steele, came about after a lawyer for the campaign and the DNC, Marc Elias, contracted last year with a company called Fusion GPS to take on the research. Fusion, which also had provided opposition research on Trump to a Republican during the GOP primary, hired Steele for the job.
However, the Post report cites a source who said the Clinton campaign and DNC didn’t know Elias had hired Fusion GPS for the research. Fusion gave the dossier to Elias, but the Post reports that it’s not certain if he shared any information from the document with the campaign or DNC. This leaves a lot of questions, like why the campaign and DNC would pay for opposition research they’d never get to see or use.
Although some of the dossier’s claims have been confirmed, it is infamous for some far out stuff, which you can read for yourself here.
